The stigma surrounding mental health has decreased significantly in recent years, but it is still an important topic today. In Pennsylvania, 1.8 million people suffer from a mental health condition, while only 40% of these individuals receive treatment. Recognizing a need for mental health services in Chester County, Dr. Katie Bowman and the Christian Life Center at Lincoln University joined forces to form the New London Counseling Center in 2019.

Care is available for patients ages five and older, and services include individual, couple, and family sessions in both 25 and 50-minute time slots. New London Counseling Center has offered a variety of group sessions in the past including a Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy group for adults, Dementia and Memory Loss group for caregivers and family members of those suffering from memory loss, and a group for elementary schoolers experiencing anxiety.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, New London Counseling Center transitioned to telehealth services which are still available today providing patients the flexibility to come into the office for their visits or call in from the comfort of their own homes.
“We do a great service to the people who come here to help them realize that they are making themselves a better person”, says Michelle Sapp, Office Manager and Social Media Manager of New London Counseling Center.
“We see the change in the people that come here, and we are doing our part to try and reach the masses to show that there is no stigma in getting mental health care if you need it”.
New London Counseling Center continues to grow and expand to maximize its ability to serve Chester County. Their new offices will be located at 1016 State Road, Lincoln University and are expected to be open in September 2022. Upon completion, New London Counseling Center will be able to serve nearly four times as many clients.
“I want people to walk into NLCC and immediately feel like they are entering a place where they are loved and cared for,” says Dr.Katie Bowman, Executive Director of New London Counseling Center.
“We want our clients to know they are important and that there is hope. We encourage a culture that supports mental well-being and reduces shame surrounding our struggles. We all deserve to be treated with compassion and respect.”
New London Counseling Center will host its second annual Denim and Diamonds Gala event on Thursday, September 22nd. The event will be held at the Barn of Nottingham> and is open to the community. Tickets and sponsor information is available at the website.
